SALARY $3,163.64 - $3,714.91 MONTHLY
POSITION INFORMATION: Position allocable to this class assist in the provision of nursing care and medical treatment of inmate patients in a Sheriff's custody facility.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Makes rounds of in-patient areas and cells to observe and report condition of all inmate patients to nursing personnel.
- Observes visible signs of patient condition and reports these observations to the nursing staff on duty.
- Assists in custody facility clinics by obtaining and documenting computerized medical histories, examining patients for visible medical conditions or symptoms of disease, assists physicians by preparing charts, and obtaining specimens.
- Applies dressings, administers medication through injection: administers therapeutic measures such as sitz and starch baths, bladder irrigations, and Intermittent Positive Pressure Breathing (IPPB) treatments.
- Observes and reports objective behavior of patients undergoing narcotic withdrawal, delirium tremens, or suffering from effects of mental illness.
SELECTION REQUIREMENTS
Completion of the prescribed curriculum in a hospital or medical corps* followed by two years' paid experience as a hospital corps member or medical service technician in the United States Armed Forces -OR- One year's paid experience as a Licensed Vocational Nurse in the State of California.*
Physical Class: 4 - Arduous: Involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working on irregular surfaces; and occasionally requires extraordinary physical activity.
Licenses: A valid license to practice as a vocational nurse issued by the California Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians*. A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
Special Requirement Information: *Applicants must submit documentation substantiating completion of the required curriculum and/or a copy of their license to practice Vocational Nursing in the State of California at the time of filing. Applications without the required license will be considered incomplete, and subject to disqualification.
SPECIAL INFORMATION: Shift: Any Shift
Appointees may be required to work any shift, including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES MUST COMPLETE A THOROUGH BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION, INCLUDING A FINGERPRINT SEARCH. Examples of disqualifying factors include: Any felony convictions; job related misdemeanor convictions; certain serious traffic convictions or patterns of traffic violations (3 moving violations in one year; failure to appear; at fault accidents; suspended license; driving under the influence); poor credit history; poor employment history; substance abuse; anyone on probation.
VACANCY INFORMATION
The eligible register resulting from this examination will be used to fill vacancies throughout the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Correctional Services Division, Medical Services Bureau.
Qualifications
EXAMINATION CONTENT: This examination will consist of two (2) parts:
PART I - A qualifying written test consisting of a medication calculations. HAND HELD BATTERY/SOLAR OPERATED NON-TAPE PRODUCING CALCULATOR MAY BE USED DURING THE WRITTEN EXAMINATION. Candidates will be allowed two (2) opportunities to pass the written test. Unsuccessful candidates will be scheduled after two (2) weeks from the original test date and must keep the scheduled appointment. Candidates who fail the test or fail to appear for the second opportunity may not retake the written test for a period of six (6) months from the written test date.
A passing score must be achieved in order to proceed to Part II.
THE WRITTEN TEST IS NOT REVIEWABLE BY CANDIDATES PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19.
PART II - An interview covering training, experience, personal fitness, and general ability to perform the duties of the position weighted 100%. Candidates may not compete in the interview portion of this examination more than once every twelve (12) months.
Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher in order to be placed on the eligible register.
ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:
The names of candidates receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months from the date of promulgation. No person may compete in this examination more than once every twelve (12) months.
