Miranda D.,

It's always good go get different views. I got the following view from a neat free job interview course at employee101.com. This is a direct reprint from one of that sites pages:

Study Company Dress Customs

Many people never really give much thought concerning what to wear at each particular interview. They've gone out and bought a new dress or a new suit. That’s what they wear to all interviews. However, companies today have many different dress codes and customs. Study the dress customs of the people in your line of work. Go down to the company a few days before the interview and notice what the employees are wearing as they enter or leave work.

I think the above advice from employee101.com has merit. Remember, many mordern companies today, think being in a suit or dress shows old fashion thinking., when they or looking for state-of-the-art thinking.

Just a different view. Hop it helps.

I went to Drew in Los Angeles. Most schools are very competitive to get in to. It takes about 2 years (FT) to complete the prerequisites to be admitted. Once you're in, another 2 years FT (NO BREAKS FOR TWO STRAIGHT YEARS! Yes, you must live, breath, and eat the stuff.) to complete. Drew is the oldest program in CA, second oldest in the nation after Duke. And by far the most affordable of them all, apart form Riverside, which is a community college program. It's not an easy endeavor, but your choices afterward and rate of pay are very rewarding.

English had always been my favorite subject, and when I was in elementary school (even through middle school) I was always writing poetry and fiction stories. And even though none of it was worthy of a Pulitzer, my teachers were always very encouraging. When I got to college, I had another inspiring teacher for my magazine editing class. Her love of grammar and style was contagious, and it brought back that excitement about writing that I had when I was younger. I knew then that I wanted editing to be my career. But after college, I moved to L.A., where the publishing pond is small and there are a lot of fish. I spent the first year working retail while trying to find someplace that would hire me. Eventually I landed an internship with a small magazine and, after three months, they hired me as their freelance copy editor. After another internship, and getting turned down by three of four magazines, I found a part-time job as a proofreader. With some freelance work, I was able to make ends meet.

I guess the moral of my story is persistence and flexibility, and not doubting yourself when places don't hire you. Just keep getting experience while you look for that perfect job, even if it means freelance work. Keep educating yourself about the publishing world, get familiar with style manuals, and eventually some company will see your potential (and confidence) and snatch you up!

Let me try understand this, you are trying to CONVINCE your company to let you work from home 1-2 days a week. In addition your employer gets the privilege of paying for your T-1 internet line? I have to say that you are not making a very strong case for your employer to go along with this. First ask yourself, what does your employer have to gain by allowing you to work from home? Will you be more efficient? Will it save them money?

Most companies allow expense allowances for their employees that work from home, or on the road. The catch is it must be necessary for you to perform your job. Even if that is the case, you are only talking about working a couple days from home. Why would your employer ever agree to this?

I agree. I don't think you ever under dress for an interview. I know here where we work, even though it's a super casual office, if the interviewee doesn't dress professionally, it's a huge know against their chances.

I think most people in "Work from home" positions are likely in some type of sales. Keep in mind that you don't make any money if you goof off.

In a past position, we worked from the office and out in the field. I was out of the office about 70% and worked all hours, morning night, sometimes weekends. I sometimes exceeded my 3,000 minute cell phone plan too.(Made great money for the effort.)

You need to have trust, and of course create lots of sales or production for your company.

This is great advice from Corey C. I have done the whole work from home thing and a four letter word got in the way E-S-P-N.

If you've been with your current company for a good length of time I'm sure you have a good reputation of being loyal. Perhaps ask for a 6 month trial run. If it works negotiate longer, if not the worst that can happen is you go back to your cubical and say to yourself 'At least I have a job'.

I can definitely relate to Corey C and Maddog's ideas. Some of my earlier
ambitions of writing, music, and photography are more of hobbies now.

I have fun a find a lot of creativity in figuring out how to find, network, and close business.
It's completely entrepreneurial. -- And I'm not afraid to start from scratch, which is key.

I guess it's always been there since 11 or 12 years of age pushing a lawn mower door to door,
selling school raffle tickets and Christmas Cards, or cashing in soda bottles from construction sites.

It's truly amazing to be part of something so special and exciting. When I was first starting out in the recruiting world I'd never thought I would have the opportunity to help others. Help others and networking. Isn't that what growing your business is all about?

It's like taking two tin cans and tying them together with string and playing telephone. WOW! I remember that far back.

The formula to our recruiting business is a real easy one. Connect great people with great employers.

LET'S KEEP AMERICA WORKING!

Hi Alex,
I believe that if your company agrees to allow you to work from home they should agree to pay for any necessary supplies, including a T-1 line.

In convincing the employer I would bet on your past work performance history. If you are a real go getter and known as a hard worker you will have a better chance of getting this approved. On the other hand if you show up late for work or are the first one to jump out the door each day the working at home thing could be seen as a way to slack off a couple days out of the week....

Sales is great. What other job allows you to earn as much as a 20 year senior manager in thirty-six months if you work hard and have talent?

It appears that I have become a Sales person, but I didn't plan on this- not exactly. As a youngster I envisioned myself as a professional surfer, football player, rock n roll singer, or even an actor but I think we all have visions of grandeur before we get out in the real world and life takes us where it takes us.

I do now looking back at my formative years see where I kind of always had a sales mentality whether it was trying to work deals with mom to stay up late or cutting deals with my pals to get a something they had that I wanted. So it wasn't what I planned to be a "Sales guy" but it's not hard to see why I ended up being one.

Hi, this is the editor of Working World. I always advise people to err on the side of being too conservative rather than too lax during a job interview. You need to share that you care about the job and that you made an effort. If you know it's a casual, perhaps hip, environment, wear business attire that is professional but with a twist. You don't need to go with a navy blue IBM look. Put your best foot forward. This is a crowded job market and you want to make yourself stand out.

I'm trying to get my company to allow me to work from home, at least a day or two a week. Does anyone have any experience with this? In terms of convincing one's employer and making the whole process work. Are there ground rules that make the process more smooth? Should they pay for my T-1 line or is that my responsibility?

You could call mine the accidental career. I was an art history major in college, which isn't exactly a highly marketable skill. What? is the Getty looking for a new curator? Please... Anyhow, I had always fooled around with my Mac designing flyers for parties, and at one point one of my friends asked me to design business cards. One thing lead to another and pretty soon I had a thriving little business. I took a couple of classes through a college extension program and got a great job doing advertising design and layout for an ad agency.
