Working Smart: Background Checks

Are you reading the job postings but having trouble with the jargon? Here are some tips for deciphering the want-ad code.

Background check can mean many things. Some employers might check one reference; others might pay to do a complete criminal record check. If you have a problem in your past, you needn’t volunteer information. But you must answer honestly or risk dismissal if past legal problems come to light later.

Clean DMV means that you need to spend the money, get a copy of your driving record from the Department of Motor Vehicles, and be ready to present it at the interview. Usually having no violations in the past three years is sufficient.

Own transportation needs careful interpretation. It can mean the worksite has no public transportation, although rides and carpools are fine. But if it says “have own car,” then you might be expected to use your car in performing the job, in which case you will also have to provide proof of insurance.

Drug test required means the company will send you for a drug test at a place and time of its choice. Recent or current drug use will almost certainly disqualify you.

Proof of identity means that you must be able to prove that you can work in this county legally. Most employers require proof of identity, that is, birth certificate, or government-issued I.D. You will also need a Social Security card and, if applicable, a green card or work visa. If you are underage, you will need a work permit. Come prepared.
