This year, 2009, marks the centennial year for West Coast University, which started as an ophthalmology school in 1909. In that time, WCU has consistently grown and updated its programs, and in the 1950s it was one of the first schools to offer bachelor’s degree programs for working adults. In 1997, WCU refocused its efforts and, under new leadership, sought to become an educational leader in the field of heath care.

It’s appropriate, then, that this celebratory year includes the addition of another “cathedral of learning” dedicated to providing the facilities and environment students need to succeed in such a fast-growing field: the new state-of-the-art Los Angeles campus located in North Hollywood.

The new location includes four pristine and expansive labs, 10 modern classrooms and nearly 45,000 square feet — with plans to expand to 100,000 — and can accommodate 1,500 students. Its beach-themed locale — including a pier walkway reminiscent of a boardwalk — open-air spaces and tranquil colors offer students an inviting place to gather and study while adding to the revitalization efforts in the North Hollywood community.

One of the main focus areas of WCU is its nursing program, and as a special tribute to nurses the new campus features a wall display of vintage photos that tell the story of the profession over the past century. In addition to the photography, the Golden State Nursing Foundation has loaned the school antique pieces, including pictures, books, artifacts and uniforms, which are on exhibit for the enjoyment and education of the students and campus visitors.

The school’s dedication to nursing continues through its rigorous curriculum, and Dianne Moore, Ph.D., MPH, CNM, RN and vice president of nursing academics, says, “Given the predictions that nurses will remain in great demand, WCU is committed to educating qualified, compassionate nurses to fill these vital positions.”

“For 100 years, WCU has been preparing students to enter the work force and make a difference,” says Dr. Barry Ryan, the new president of West Coast University, “and we’re committed to continuing that philosophy by providing an innovative and challenging learning environment for the next 100.”
