Working Smart
From Runway to Workday
No one would ever mistake me for a fashionista, although I do have a keen interest in current trends and read several fashion magazines. The failure, I believe, is in the execution, and I suspect this is true of many of us. Still there are ways to avoid pitfalls when it comes to your working wardrobe.
• Dress as if you’re part of the group. A peacock stands out, but probably not in a positive way. If everyone in the office sports heels, leave the gladiator shoes at home.
• Be sure that whatever you wear fits properly. Frayed pant hems and gaping blouses don’t cut it. Neither do skirts or jeans that need constant tugging. Wear shoes you can walk in — comfortably.
• Learn to iron and do simple repairs or, yes, outsource. Tailors are remarkably inexpensive and most laundries offer bulk discounts on dress shirts and blouses.
• Keep your love of trendy risks under control. A subtle use of this season’s color — and accessory — is best.
• Speaking of accessories: minimize. Any piercings other than one in each ear are too much. Your nails should look like your fingers can still type, and plain, single-color polish is enough for work. Save the glitter and stars for the weekend.
• Cover what is supposed to be covered — no plumbers or strip artists welcome. Be sure you can bend over and reach up without exposing bra straps, thongs, your favorite boxers or, need I say, excess cleavage.
Sound too proper? Maybe even bossy? Guess what? Most employers don’t think so.

There is a great deal of flexibility in Los Angeles regarding staffer dress codes, but people are judged everyday regarding the way they choose to present themselves in their clothing choices. The goal is to find a balance between self-expression and professionalism.
